According to a recent article and study by @NOAA, sea turtle populations are starting to rebound globally, even amdist climate change. This good news is due to habitat and nesting beach protections. One big exception to this overall trend is the Pacific leatherback turtle, who’s populations still experience rapid decline. A new study finds that sea turtles around the world are nesting at smaller sizes than in the past. Researchers suggest this trend is linked to population recovery, with more young first-time nesters entering the breeding population. One angle not explored in the paper: the role of fisheries bycatch. My thinking is the longer a turtle lives (and thus the larger it grows), the greater the risk it faces of being caught incidentally and never making it back to its nesting beach.
