Statue of Athena Parthenos (the Virgin Goddess) Roman, Imperial period, 2nd or 3rd century CE Marble (Mt. Pentelikon, Greece) This statue represents one of the closest ancient copies-in much smaller scale-of the thirty-seven-foot statue of the goddess Athena that once stood inside the Parthenon in Athens. Her extended right hand held a winged victory and her left a spear. A large shield leaned against her left side with a coiled snake at the base. Although we do not know where this statue was fo
