As Chief Judge Raouf Rasheed Abdul Rahman read out the verdict, Hussein defiantly refused to stand and began shouting slogans. The case was automatically referred to an appeals court for review, which, on December 26, 2006, upheld the death sentence after rejecting his appeal. Just four days later, on December 30, 2006, Saddam Hussein was executed."
