On March 19, 1851, the first edition of The Daily Union was published. The newspaper started out in response to the Placer Times and Sacramento Transcript cutting costs in their newspaper offices which cut wages for much of the employees. Many of he typesetters, reporters, and printers unionized and left to establish their own paper, hence the name The Daily Union. Dr. John Frederick Morse was the newspaper’s first editor.
