The Tar Creek Superfund Site is part of the Tri-State Mining District, which includes northeastern Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas, and southwestern Missouri. The site originally mined lead and zinc to make bullets during both World Wars.

Tar Creek Superfund site is a United States Superfund site, declared in 1983, located in the cities of Picher, Douthat and Cardin, Ottawa County, in northeastern Oklahoma. From 1900 to the 1960s lead mining and zinc mining companies left behind huge open chat piles that were heavily contaminated by these metals, cadmium , and others.

Dec 16, 2019 · The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality announced it has introduced a new, interactive map for residents of Ottawa County, the site of the massive Tar Creek Superfund Site.

EPA published the Tar Creek Superfund Site Strategic Plan. Solar reuse assessment for the Bird Dog Chat Pile is published. Site remediation is ongoing. Redevelopment activities continue and large parts of the site remain in continued use.
