Aug 10, 2013 · Oakley Park Museum is a historic plantation home in Edgefield, South Carolina. Built in 1835 by Daniel Byrd, it later became the home of Confederate general Martin W. Gary and a landmark of the Red Shirt Campaign to end Reconstruction in South Carolina.

From the angle formed by the junction of these streets an oak-wooded park spreads over several acres of ground. One can easily see the origin of the name, “Oakley Park.” Built by Daniel Bird, a descendant of the famous Virginia Byrds, in 1835, the house resembles interior designs of “Halcyon Grove.”

Included in these sites is a wonderful house museum, Oakley Park, the Red Shirt Shrine of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Kendall Mill, Edgefield’s beautifully restored 1896 textile mill.
