Francesco Schettino (Italian pronunciation: [franˈtʃesko sketˈtiːno]; born 14 November 1960) [1] is an Italian former shipmaster who commanded the cruise ship Costa Concordia when the ship struck an underwater rock and capsized off the Italian island of Giglio on 13 January 2012.

In January of 2012, the Costa Concordia, a cruise ship sailing for Costa Cruises, capsized off the coast of Tuscany. The accident caused 32 deaths. The ship’s Captain, Francesco Schettino, had worked for Costa Cruises for 11 years.
