But I think there’s a huge difference between thoughtful and elegant brutalist pieces like the Barbican and Boston City Hall and what might be called “accidental” brutalism in structures built of raw concrete from necessity, laziness, or cost constraints rather than as a design choice.

Concrete, the primary medium of most brutalist architecture I've seen, seems to discolor quickly and buildings with this as an external facade tend to look "dirty" and run down. The excessive number of protrusions and overhangs look gaudy and attention seeking.

The Lloyd Plaza buildings on Irving between NE 12th and 16th are great. There was a great a brutalist office building across the street at 1500 NE Irving, but they recently ruined it by painting the bare concrete.
