Civ 4 still feels like the overall best 4x I own. Granted, nowadays if I'm playing Civ I'm playing Civ 6. Honorable mentions: Endless Legend - fantastic aesthetic and visual design. If battles were more like Humankind this would easily be my top pick X4 Foundations (I'd call this 4x-adjacent) - really cool to experience a first-person "4x" game.

There's a whole sub-family of 4x games where you control the battles. Age of Wonders, various Masters of Orion clones, various Masters of Magic clones, Heroes of Might and Magic (sorta 4x-y), etc. Most grand strategy games come from Paradox, and none of them allow for battle control.

Aurora is a 4X space simulation game that rewards patience. Difficult to learn and slow to play, this is a game well-suited to people who like deep strategy and don't mind poor UI.

Jan 12, 2024 · The SD_4X upscaler is superior (IMHO) because it takes in your conditioning, allowing it to refine the details inline with your intended composition. If the original was generated using an SD checkpoint, then the 4X upscaler with the same conditioning should produce better-aligned upscales.
