The final chapter in the Dark Knight saga allows Bale to move deeply into Bruce/Batman’s troubled soul. Bale, up to every challenge in a tough role, gives a hypnotic, haunting performance.

The Dark Knight Rises is very good as a standalone movie. As the bookend to a trilogy, it’s even better. Either way, it’s not without one or two slight problems, but they’re not massive ones.
