Original Sin showrunner Clyde Phillips reveals that the prequel was greenlit the second that Dexter: New Blood officially ended.

Dexter’s storyline in the OG show left him hiding out as a lumberjack after his stepsister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), was killed off. But in “New Blood,” it was implied that his life had ended, so they decided to opt for another spinoff instead.

"If people like Easter eggs, this show is going to be an Easter egg hunt," said showrunner Clyde Phillips. By Whatever shock still exists from Dexter’s miraculous survival is quickly replaced by a big hit of nostalgia.
