Richard Gadd, the creator of the hit Netflix limited series “Baby Reindeer,” based on real events from the comedian’s life, became a surprise sensation at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards despite the $170 million defamation lawsuit the show is currently facing.

The $170 million defamation case against Netflix over Baby Reindeer is heading to trial next year. On Tuesday, a federal judge set a start date of May 6, 2025 for Fiona Harvey ’s big swing action against the streamer. The proceedings are estimated to last about two weeks.

Netflix saw a British invasion this year - with four of its 10 biggest shows globally in the first half of 2024 coming from the U.K.: "Fool Me Once," the Emmy-winning "Baby Reindeer," "The Gentlemen" and "One Day.

Netflix's CO-CEO Ted Sarandos announced the news, off the back of Gadd's Emmy wins Sunday night, at The Royal Television Society London Convention.

The seven-episode limited series is based on Gadd’s award-winning and hit Edinburgh Fringe one-man play. The televised version follows struggling comedian Donny Dunn’s (Gadd) warped relationship with his female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deeply buried trauma.
