MINNEAPOLIS — Marvin Haynes, who was released from prison last year after spending almost two decades behind bars for a murder he did not commit, has filed a compensation claim with the Minnesota Supreme Court seeking nearly $2 million in damages.

A Minnesota man who served nearly 20 years in prison before his murder conviction was vacated last year has filed a claim for nearly $2 million from the state.

Haynes, who was convicted of killing 55-year-old Randy Sherer in 2005, was exonerated in December of last year after spending roughly 20 years in the Stillwater prison for charges of first-degree murder and second-degree assault.
