In Ventura County, one person died in a July 3 house fire after fireworks exploded in the garage in the 1600 block of Edmund Street, the Simi Valley Police Department reported. The fire erupted in the garage and spread to the attic and main areas of the home about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, officials said.

Fourth of July weekend came and went with Americans celebrating Independence Day. As always, fireworks were a common sight across the country. This year, the state of California made a firmer effort to crack down on the use of illegal fireworks.
