Pension schemes for the states of Wisconsin and Michigan are among the top holders of US stock market funds devoted to crypto, while some pension fund managers in the UK and Australia have also made small allocations in recent months to bitcoin using funds or derivatives.

During a great year for cryptocurrencies, hedge funds focused on digital assets unsurprisingly did very well, too. It’s just that many didn’t do as well as the industry’s most famous token: Bitcoin.

Several crypto hedge funds saw positive returns last year, but none could match Bitcoin's remarkable performance, which surged 120% to surpass $100,000 for the first time.

Bitcoin has changed direction after weeks of retreat during which crypto investors dumped risky assets. The cryptocurrency rose 4% in the past 24 hours to $100,000 immediately following the release of closely-watched inflation data.

On Wednesday, the price of bitcoin continued rising, surging to over $99,000 as it looked poised to return to the $100,000 mark, driven by new inflation data. Minutes after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics unveiled new data from the Consumer Price Index, bitcoin’s price jumped by $1,500, representing a 2% price improvement for the day.

Bitcoin extended its rebound on Wednesday, hovering below the $100,000 after another encouraging inflation report stirred risk-on appetite.

The fall comes after the cryptocurrency experienced a meteoric rise, fueled in part by the reelection of Donald Trump.
