Emmanuel Macron and Sir Keir Starmer have discussed the need for “a new deterrent” to break down people smuggling gangs.The French president and the prime minister held crunch talks at No 10 on the second day of Macron’s state visit to the UK on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister hopes the French president will sign up to a “one in, one out” deal when they hold a Franco-British summit at Downing Street.
