A southwest Louisiana resident has been hospitalized with the state’s first recorded case of bird flu, or H5N1, a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza the patient contracted after exposure to sick and dead birds, the Louisiana Department of Health announced Friday.

LDH said 60 human cases have been reported nationwide as of Dec. 13, all linked to contact with infected animals. No human-to-human transmission has occurred in the U.S.

The Louisiana Department of Health said on Friday it has detected the first presumptive positive human case of H5N1 bird flu infection in the U.S. state. The individual is a resident of southwestern Louisiana and is currently hospitalized.
