A spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said their office is aiming to release possible redrawn maps on Friday.
Voters will be tasked with approving new congressional maps in a special election in November, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced.
Maps made public Friday afternoon show how California Democrats hope to reconfigure the state’s 52 congressional districts. The plan targets five of California’s nine Republican members of Congress, and is designed to counteract the redistricting efforts in Texas that would favor Republicans.
“Our proposed map was created using traditional redistricting criteria, consistent with guidelines laid out by the California’s Citizen Redistricting Commission,” according to a cover letter from Julie Merz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee included with the map.
California's Democratic leaders are pushing ahead with an effort to redraw the state's Congressional lines this year to try to strip Republicans from office and send more Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Texas redistricting efforts & California retaliation threats raise questions about democracy

Governor Gregg Abbott is trying to make his friend President Trump happy by redrawing the maps to make it easier for Republicans to win five more seats in Congress and maintain control on Capitol Hill.
Democrats have struggled to find effective ways to oppose President Donald Trump, and even some Democratic voters describe the party as weak. But Trump’s push for states to redraw political maps and create more GOP-friendly House seats in time for the 2026 election has raised the stakes.
