The IRS free tax filing program is a partnership with private providers of tax preparation software. Other free filing options include Free File Fillable Forms and Direct File.

The IRS has announced that IRS Free File is open for business. The IRS starts accepting and processing individual tax returns on Jan. 29, 2024.

There are two different free options including Guided Tax Preparation with software to help calculate all the tax math, and Fillable Forms where you do all the work yourself.

The Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) Free File Guided Tax Software will be available to use as of Friday, January 10 for the 2025 tax filing season.

Additionally, individuals with gross income above $84,000 could still use Free File through fillable forms (more on those later).

Other free options include VITA, TCE, and MilTax. The IRS officially starts accepting returns next week. Free File Fillable Forms for higher earners are available from January 27.
