Effective April 25, the agency started deducting up to 50% of the overpayment amount from a beneficiary's monthly check instead of 100%, officials said.

If you receive more money than expected from your Social Security payment, don't assume it's a gift from the Social Security Administration. More than likely, you received an overpayment because of changes in your account that either weren't reported on time or to another mistake by the SSA itself.

The Social Security Administration said it will now seek to recoup less money from beneficiaries. Advocates say the revised policy is still burdensome.
