The San Diego Padres have landed closer Mason Miller and left-handed starting pitcher JP Sears from the Athletics in a blockbuster trade deadline deal, the team announced Thursday. The return includes top shortstop prospect Leodalis De Vries, who ranked No. 3 on CBS Sports' midseason rankings.

The San Diego Padres made several bold moves at yet another trade deadline. General manager A.J. Preller added hard-throwing closer Mason Miller from the Athletics and All-Star first baseman Ryan O’Hearn from Baltimore while swinging five total deals for seven major league players.

The Padres already employ a solid closer in the form of Robert Suarez. But Miller is younger, cheaper, and under team control through 2029. Preller can now package Suarez to another club in order to improve the club’s lineup. Or he can stand pat and boast a super ‘pen.
