A storm system is set to arrive in Minnesota late Friday, likely bringing several inches of snow for the Twin Cities.

UNDATED ( WJON News) -- The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Minnesota. The Advisory will be in effect from 9:00 p.m. Friday through 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches.

Despite the frigid temperatures so far this winter, the amount of snowfall in Minnesota is still significantly below average.

The snow arrives in western Minnesota late Friday and reaches the metro by about midnight. Most of the snow will fall overnight, likely exiting Minnesota by midday Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, which will be in effect from Friday night through Saturday afternoon. Heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches are possible. There is still time for the track to change slightly.

With that, the National Weather Service has canceled the winter storm watch and replaced it with a winter weather advisory, signaling expected lower snow totals. A winter storm watch remains over western Wisconsin.

A snowstorm for much of Minnesota is on tap for the weekend, starting late Friday. How much falls and where that falls? That’s tricky according to WCCO-TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Shaffer who says this is not “snowmageddon” but worth watching.
