Late night skygazers were treated to the sight of the harvest moon in Northern Ireland. Wednesday's display also coincided with a rare partial lunar eclipse, which is next expected to take place in August 2026. There are only four supermoons each year.

The harvest supermoon lit up the UK’s sky last night alongside a lunar eclipse. A supermoon is when the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, appearing bigger and brighter in the sky. Those watching will have also seen a sliver of the moon disappear into the Earth’s shadow in a partial lunar eclipse.

Tonight stargazers across North America will be gifted with two astronomical events as both a supermoon and a partial lunar eclipse will be visible. Those observing will be in for a rare treat. September's full moon happens to be a supermoon as well as this year's Harvest Moon,
