The Aurora Police Department has adopted a new policy allowing officers to pursue stolen vehicles. Vicente Arenas spoke with members of the department on what things will look like moving forward.

The Aurora Police Department is adding vehicle theft to the list of circumstances that allow officers to initiate a police pursuit.

The Aurora PD's modified pursuit policy, which allows officers to chase when they believe a driver is under the influence or in a stolen car, will keep the community safer, the police chief said.

According to Colorado State Patrol, there were 23,578 car thefts across the state in 2023, compared to 2024, when that number dropped to 17,174 car thefts.

The Aurora Police Department says the modifications will enhance the department's ability to hold offenders accountable for criminal activities, such as car theft and driving under the influence.

Aurora police officers are now allowed to chase after suspected DUIs and stolen vehicles. The Aurora Police Department recently revised its pursuit policy. “Before they could only go into pursuit of individuals if there was violence related or it was an act of violent crime,
