An air quality alert was issued for parts of Southern California because of the effects of the Canyon Fire, fueled by dry brush and extremely high temperatures.

A fast-burning brush fire erupted in California's Ventura County on Thursday afternoon and quickly spread to 1,500 acres. There was zero containment as of late afternoon and the fire later crossed into Los Angeles County,

A wildfire in Southern California sparked early Thursday evening and grew quickly in size overnight. Hundreds of firefighters continue to fight the new Canyon Fire that has spread to around 5,370 acres.
