TikTok on Monday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to step in on an emergency basis to block the federal law that would ban the popular platform in the United States unless its China-based parent company agreed to sell it.

TikTok filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court on Monday in an effort to block a federal law that would effectively ban the app in the U.S. unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sells its stake.

The company wants the Supreme Court to intervene before Jan. 19, the deadline Congress set for TikTok’s China-based owner to sell the video-sharing platform.
