President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of nearly 1,500 people and pardoning 39 others in "the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history," the White House announced Thursday.

The pardon covers offenses Hunter Biden "has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through 1, 2024."

Despite the White House's assurances last month that the president had no intentions of pardoning his son, the announcement came through on Sunday evening that he had pardoned him.

The Biden family discussed the pardon for Hunter Biden during the Thanksgiving holiday in Nantucket, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News.
