Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds names state Sen. Chris Cournoyer as next lieutenant governor
The pick comes as Reynolds prepares her priorities for the 2025 legislative session and as she gears up for an expected 2026 reelection campaign.
'Deeply honored': Iowa's lieutenant governor sworn in Monday
Chris Cournoyer as her new lieutenant governor. Reynolds made the announcement in a news conference Monday morning at the Statehouse. Cournoyer, 54, will fill the role vacated in September when Adam Gregg stepped down to take the helm of the Iowa Bankers Association.
Reynolds selects Cournoyer as Iowa's lieutenant governor
Cournoyer has served in the Iowa Senate since 2019. Iowa has not had a lieutenant governor since September 2 when Adam Gregg resigned to become CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association. Reynolds waited until after the election to begin interviewing candidates for the position. The governor said Cournoyer will support a wide range of policy priorities.

Reynolds, who was former Gov. Terry Branstad’s lieutenant governor, appointed Gregg to the position in May 2017, when Branstad was named U.S. ambassador to China and Reynolds became governor. The Republican ticket was elected to a full term in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.
