Heavy rains were forecast to start late Friday in Antigua and Barbuda, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and southern and eastern Puerto Rico.

The National Hurricane Center reports that Erin has become a Category 3 hurricane in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen further later in the day.

Erin has slowly organized and strengthened and was upgraded to a hurricane Friday morning, the first of the Atlantic season.
