Britain said on Tuesday it would recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes steps to relieve suffering in Gaza, where starvation is spreading, and reaches a ceasefire in the nearly two-year war with Hamas.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) called the images of people, including children, starving in Gaza “disturbing and heartbreaking,” but insisted that Hamas “has stolen the food,” despite reports from the Israeli military that there is no proof that the Palestinian militant group had systematically stolen aid.

The military statement said airdrops would be conducted in coordination with international aid organizations. It was not clear where they would be carried out.
