After three years at Bottega Veneta, Matthieu Blazy is heading to Chanel in a coveted role last held by Karl Lagerfeld's protégé.

French luxury brand Chanel has opted for 40-year-old Matthieu Blazy as its new creative director instead of one of the industry's established celebrity designers.

Belgian national has been creative director of Bottega Veneta since 2021. He will join the storied French house in 2025.

After months of speculation, the French fashion house has appointed Bottega Veneta’s creative director to its top job.

French fashion house Chanel selected former Bottega Veneta design chief Matthieu Blazy as its next creative director, the company said on Thursday, after months of fevered speculation about the industry's most coveted job.

At his former gig as Bottega Veneta's creative director, Blazy was creating high-style looks for Julianne Moore, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Yeoh and (many) others. He'll do the same at the house Coco built.

The French fashion house’s beauty line is a standalone phenomenon—and just as important as the clothing offerings.

“Matthieu Blazy is one of the most gifted designers of his generation,” said Alain Wertheimer, global executive chairman, and Leena Nair, global ceo of Chanel. “His vision and talent will reinforce the energy of the brand and our position as a leader in luxury.” Annual revenues at Chanel exceed $19 billion, WWD has reported.
