Major League Baseball had a successful test run debut of its Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system Friday at Salt River Fields, the spring training home shared by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

ABS is MLB’s name for an automated strike zone — also known as robot umps. In a full ABS game, there will be a human umpire behind the plate, signaling the calls communicated through ABS. We won’t be seeing that full system in action this spring. Instead, teams will have a limited amount of challenges.

Starting Thursday at Camelback Ranch, where the Dodgers and Cubs will open Cactus League play, the ABS challenge system will begin being implemented.

Dan Wilson is, so far, intrigued by the idea of the new automatic balls and strikes (ABS) challenge system. His players, so far, are still figuring it out.

Each team will have two challenges per game to call into question ball or strike calls. If the challenge is upheld by the replay, the team retains its challenge.
